This week’s question
Question 1
In large randomized trials, beta-carotene supplements were tested for cancer prevention. What happened to the smokers who took them?
A)Fewer lung cancers
B)No change
C)More lung cancers
D)It was never tested
Show the answer
C) More lung cancers
In the ATBC trial, beta-carotene alone raised lung cancer in male smokers. In the CARET trial, beta-carotene with retinyl palmitate raised both lung cancer and deaths in smokers and asbestos workers, and the trial was stopped early. In mostly non-smoking groups it did nothing either way.
