Evidence Based Longevity (EBL)Check what I take
Accessibility

Accessibility.

Evidence Based Longevity is a reading site. Every grade, every dose and every citation on it is text, and text should reach a person using a keyboard, a screen reader, a magnifier, or a browser set to large type.

Where this stands

We are working toward the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 Level AA. We target 2.2 rather than 2.1 because W3C encourages using the current version; 2.2 is backward compatible with 2.1 and adds criteria including focus appearance not obscured, minimum target size, redundant entry and accessible authentication. We have not been independently audited against it, and we do not claim conformance.

Saying that plainly is deliberate. This site exists to separate what is supported from what is merely asserted, and an accessibility badge is an assertion. On the day there is an audit to point at, this page will point at it.

What is checked on every build

Part of accessibility is machine-checkable, and the part that is runs on every build, before anything reaches the site. Each page has to carry one main region and a skip link that actually lands in it, with a heading inside. The areas outside that region have to be named, so a reader moving by landmark can tell the notices from the navigation from the page. No link may sit inside another link.

The color palette is defined in one place and held there, so a contrast level cannot be raised in one file and left too dark in another, which is how this site's worst contrast failure happened and stayed invisible. The smallest type in the design is lifted to a floor on narrow screens.

A build that breaks any of those does not publish. That is the same arrangement every other rule on this site runs under, and the checks themselves are readable in the repository along with the rest of them.

What is not finished

A check that runs on every build only covers what a machine can see, and a fair estimate is that it misses most of what actually blocks somebody. So the honest half of this page is the other half.

Several of the search and filter boxes on this site carry placeholder text and nothing else. A placeholder disappears the moment you type into it, and it is not a label a screen reader can rely on, so a person may be told nothing about what the box wants. Those are the first thing being fixed. The two forms that collect anything, the contact form and the clinician application, are labeled correctly.

And nobody using assistive technology has yet gone through this site end to end. Until somebody has, no statement here about how well it works is worth as much as it sounds.

If this site blocks you

Tell us which page you were on and what happened. We will fix it, and while it is being fixed we will send you the same content in a form you can use. There is no form to fill in for this and no ticket number.

If you use assistive technology and are willing to go through the site with us, we would like to hear from you. One person walking through it is worth more than any audit.
