Cognitive & Brain Health
Cognitive decline is now understood as a modifiable trajectory, not inevitable aging. The brain is uniquely vulnerable to oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, neuroinflammation, and reduced neurotrophic signaling — all factors that research suggests may be addressable through evidence-backed nutrition strategies.

Phosphatidylserine (PS)
EFSA-approved health claim for cognitive function — one of very few supplements with EU regulatory approval. Kato-Kataoka et al. 2010: 6-month RCT showed significant memory improvement in older Japanese adults. PS is a key phospholipid in neuronal membranes, directly supporting signal transduction. Also modulates cortisol response (HPA axis). FDA qualified health claim for cognitive function: "Very limited and preliminary scientific research suggests that phosphatidylserine may reduce the risk of dementia in the elderly. FDA concludes that there is little scientific evidence supporting this claim." (21 CFR 101.83). These statements have not been evaluated by the FDA.

Bacopa Monnieri (Bacosides standardized)
Stough et al. 2001 & 2008 (Psychopharmacology): 8–12 week RCTs consistently show improved spatial working memory and information processing speed. Meta-analysis of 9 RCTs confirms significant improvements in cognitive processing speed. Must be taken for 8–12 weeks continuously — effects are not immediate. Standardize to at least 45% bacosides. Works via BDNF upregulation and acetylcholinesterase inhibition.

Omega-3 DHA (Brain-Specific)
DHA comprises 40% of the brain's polyunsaturated fatty acids. Depleted DHA is associated with cognitive decline, depression, and reduced synaptic plasticity. Algal-derived DHA (no fish required) is bioequivalent to fish oil DHA. Nordic Naturals Algae Omega is the top vegan option. Elysium Index uses DHA-focused omega-3 specifically for brain aging. Phospholipid form has enhanced brain uptake.

Lion's Mane (Hericium erinaceus)
Mori et al. 2009 (Phytotherapy Research): 16-week RCT in mild cognitive impairment showed significant cognitive improvement that reversed upon stopping. Mechanism: NGF (nerve growth factor) and BDNF stimulation via hericenones and erinacines. Standardized extract preferred. Also emerging data for anxiety and depression via gut-brain axis.

Magnesium L-Threonate (Magtein®)
The only magnesium form demonstrated to cross the blood-brain barrier in animal models and increase brain magnesium levels. Liu et al. 2016 (Neuron): improved cognitive ability across age groups. Human RCT 2023 confirmed cognitive benefits in 50–70-year-olds. Best for cognitive aging; pair with glycinate form for general magnesium repletion.

Acetyl-L-Carnitine (ALCAR)
Meta-analysis (n=1,204): improved cognition in mild cognitive impairment. ALCAR transports fatty acids into mitochondria for energy production — a process that declines with age. Also supports acetylcholine synthesis (directly relevant to memory). Crosses the blood-brain barrier. Synergistic with alpha-lipoic acid (R-ALA).

Astaxanthin 12mg
Katagiri et al. 2012: significant memory improvement in healthy older adults. Astaxanthin crosses the blood-brain barrier (unlike most carotenoids) and is 6,000× more potent than vitamin C in singlet oxygen quenching. AstaReal® is the only astaxanthin ingredient with human RCT data. Supports mitochondrial function and reduces neuroinflammation.

Curcumin (BCM-95® / Phytosome)
Rainey-Smith et al. 2016: 18-month RCT showed improved verbal memory and attention in older adults using a bioavailable curcumin. Standard curcumin has <1% bioavailability — BCM-95® and phytosome forms improve this 6–29×. Potent neuroinflammation reducer via NF-κB inhibition. Look for BCM-95®, Longvida®, or phytosome standardization.

Elysium Matter — Citicoline + Blueberry
Elysium's brain-specific formula stacks citicoline (CDP-choline — precursor to acetylcholine and phosphatidylcholine) with blueberry anthocyanins. Citicoline has multiple RCTs showing improved memory and attention. Blueberry anthocyanins: RCT in older adults showed improved word list recall and reduced depressive symptoms. One of the most evidence-grounded brain-health combinations available.
